Tshulu Sewing Cooperative was founded by Tshulu Trust in 2007 with funding from the Department of Arts and Culture. Four previously unemployed women (Mrs Takalani Florance Mulaudzi, Mrs Tshimangadzo Ryna Ramvuvhelo, Mrs Rudzani Tshitangano, and Mrs Sara JuliaNengome) received training and became seamstresses. They work in a sewing room in a building in Domboni Village donated by the Makuya Traditional Authority and refurbished by Tshulu. Their equipment includes three sewing machines (which functions with and without electricity) an industrial over-locker, and an industrial heavy duty machine for canvas. The Cooperative specializes in working with traditional Venda material. They make traditional garments such as nwenda, and ‘fusion’ clothing: western-style clothing in Venda cloth. They also have popular ranges for the kitchen, dining table and office, as well as funky travel accessories.
Tshulu seamstresses will make items to order, and are happy to accommodate special requests and experiment with new products.
