Volunteer Programmes

In collaboration with Going Brown, an Irish not-for-profit organisation, Tshulu will be running a 'Build & Teach' group volunteer project in June/July 2012.

Our vision for our volunteer programmes is that they are grounded on principles of mutual respect, exchange and learning. We recognize that well-educated volunteers have much to offer community members in under-developed areas such as HaMakuya, and, conversely, that there is an extraordinary non-material richness to life in HaMakuya that greatly benefits volunteers. We hope to facilitate an environment in which volunteers and community participants learn more about themselves and others.

What previous volunteers have achieved

• In August 2011 an Irish volunteer group of UCDVO alumni built a community bakery. Adjunct projects included building an improved stove and a demonstration kitchen for sustainable cooking techniques, assisting with establishing the library and installation of computers at the resource centre, and painting a mural map of the world.

• In 2010 the Resource Centre building was put up, and in 2011 the English language and environmental programmes were established. This was achieved by individual volunteers from the USA on 8-12 week projects.

• In 2009 volunteers on 8 week assignments established a small organic farm using the water-wise ‘circle farming’ technique of underground irrigation, and did financial management capacity building with Tshulu employees while establishing better financial systems for the organisation.
