Directions to Tshulu Camp

Tshulu Camp: S22 34.779 E30 48.518
Route 1: Via Sibasa:
(The shortest option, with relatively few 60km speed limits and less peri-urban traffic than the Thohoyandou route.)
• From the N1 just after Louis Trichardt (Makhado) turn east (right) towards Witflag.
• After about 40km at the T-junction turn right towards Sibasa (R523).
• After 20km turn left towards Gondeni & Vhufuli.
• After 18 km you will come to an intersection with an option to Thohoyandou, but keep going straight towards Sibasa and Masisi.
• After the tar ends there is about 8km of gravel to Hamakuya.
• Follow the road through Hamakuya. You will pass a police station and a clinic on your left and the Tribal Council Offices and an iron-fenced football field on your right.
• Continue along this road up over some hills and down into a dryer area. You will pass signs to the villages of Mbuyni and Musunda.
• The next village is Guyuni. Turn left and follow the signs for 8km to the camp.
• As you follow the road through the village you will see a primary school on your right and a shop. If you have made a prior arrangement the manager of Tshulu Camp will wait for you at the shop and show you the route to the Camp.
• At the end of Guyuni Village follow the road which from this point onwards is very rough: it requires a bakkie or 4x4.
• On reaching the small village of Tshianzwane the road swings sharply to the right.
• At the first opportunity (at a water tap) turn left, and, at the next opportunity (also at a water tap), turn right.
• Follow the road out of the village and continue for several kilometers.
• After crossing a dry stream, and passing an indistinct road to the left, there is a sign to Tshulu Camp.
• Turn left and follow the road past a solar panel, across another dry river bed, and up the opposite bank. The camp is about 200m from the solar panel.
• The parking area is near the baobab tree.
If you get lost, ask anyone for directions to Tshulu Camp. Everyone will be friendly and as helpful as they can.
• Or phone the Tshulu Camp Manager, Fhatuwani Makhuya (076 696 6142). There is cell coverage by the taps in Tshianswane Village and on the road by the primary school and shop in Guyuni.
• Or return to the main road at Guyuni, turn right and drive over the hills to the main village of Hamakuya. After an iron-fenced soccer field you will see a sign to Hamakuya Tribal Council. Turn right. Enter through first gate after the soccer field into the Tribal Council offices and ask for the Tshulu Trust administrators: Melta Makuya (076 7867259) or Thuseni Sigwadi (072 977 6669).
Route 2: Via Thohoyandou
(Presently there is a detour between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou because a bridge was washed away.)
• Take the N1 north to Polokwane and Louis Trichardt (Makhado).
• In Louis Trichardt (Makhado) turn right after the new mall onto the R524 to Thohoyandou.
• It is about 130 kilometres to Thohoyandou.
• At a large set of traffic lights turn left onto the R523 to Sibasa.
• Follow the road up a hill to Sibasa.
• Continue to follow the road past a prison and up another long hill.
• At the T-Junction at the top of the hill, turn right towards Masisi.
• Stay on this road all the way to Hamakuya. The last village before Hamakuya is Vhuri Vhuri. After the tar ends there is about 8km of gravel to Hamakuya.
• Follow the road through Hamakuya. You will pass a police station and a clinic on your left and the Tribal Council Offices and an iron-fenced football field on your right.

Route 3: Via Tshipise and Masisi
(The longest option but with the least number of 60km speed limits. Presently, however, the 20km stretch of
gravel between Tshikondeni Mine and Guyuni Village is in very bad condition.)
• Take the N1 North to Polokwane, and Louis Trichardt (Makhado).
• Drive north from Louis Trichardt, through the tunnels at Wylies Poort, and through the Baobab Toll Plaza.
• Take the next right turn onto the R525 towards Tshipisem Masisi and Kruger National Park’s Pafuri Gate.
• Pass by the holiday resort at Tshipise (which offers the last convenient petrol station), and continue for another 105 km to Masisi.
• At Masisi, turn south (right) onto the road to Giyani, Mutale, and Sibasa. (If you go through a boom gate, you have missed the turn and gone too far.)
• Cross over the bridge over the Mutale River and through Sanari village.
• Pass the left turn to Tshikondeni Mine, continuing straight south on what becomes a gravel road.
• You pass turns to a couple of small villages, then, after about 12 kilometers, turn to your right at the sign to Guyuni village.
• Follow the road through the village.
• You will see a primary school on your right and a shop. If you have made a prior arrangement the manager of Tshulu Camp will wait for you at the shop and show you the route to the Camp.
• At the end of Guyuni Village follow the road which twists right, left and then straight through Mopane woodlands. The road from this point onwards is very rough: it requires a bakkie or 4x4.
• On reaching the small village of Tshianzwane the road swings sharply to the right.
• At the first opportunity (at a water tap) turn left, and, at the next opportunity (also at a water tap), turn right.
• Follow the road out of the village and continue for several kilometers.
• After crossing a dry stream, and passing an indistinct road to the left, you will find a cairn of stones at the top of a slope, with a sign that says “Lodge” pointing to the left.
• Turn left here and follow the road through woodland, past a solar panel, across another dry river bed, and up the opposite bank. The camp is about 200m from the solar panel.
• The parking area is near the baobab tree.

Route 4: From Kruger’s Punda Maria Gate, or the Road from Makhado to Punda Maria
(The most scenic route from the Kruger Park)
• From Punda Maria camp, exit the Kruger Park via Punda gate.
• Travel south west on the R524 road towards Thohoyandou for about 14.4 km to the Mhinga village (ka-Mhinga)
• Take the turnoff to the right (GPS S22 47.253 E030 54.456)
• Continue through the outskirts of Mhinga, following the curve to the right. You will soon see the Luvhuvhu River on your left.
• Turn at the sign to Lambani (GPS S45.654 E030 53.478), go over the bridge over the Luvhuvhu and through the foot and mouth disease control gate.
• After about 3 kilometers, you will have passed a spaza shop and a Limpopo Province Roads Agency sign, and will see a prominent cattle kraal with rickety wooden palisade pole fencing,
turn right (S22 45.690 E030 51.939)
• Follow a winding gravel road for about 19.3 km, alongside the Luvhuvhu on your right at first, then up curving west through the hills.
• At any ambiguous points where the road splits, take the right hand fork. Eventually you will pass a radio tower on the left at the top of a slope, a shop and the Matidza post office at S22 42.391 E030 50.568.
• Follow this road up over the Vhurivhuri pass, down and over the small stream (avoid left hand turns to the clinic), and up the final steep slope to the T-junction.
• Turn right towards Sibasa, (GPS S22 41.685 E030 46.992)
• After about 7km you will be in Hamakuya, and will see a police station and then the clinic on your right. Further down the road is a sign for the Makuya Tribal Council offices to the left, behind a football field with a metal fence around it.

To get to Tshulu Camp from the Administration offices
• Turn left out of the Tribal Council grounds, and turn left at the T junction at the main road.
